Actually, burning to a CD and then ripping back to mp3 will not retain CD-quality audio. The music in its protected form is already far below CD quality - in the case of iTunes, it's been compressed to 128 kbps AAC, roughly analogous to 160 kbps mp3. By contrast (assuming 74 minutes=650 megabytes), CD-quality audio is approximately 1170 kbps. When that is compressed down to 128 kbps, data is lost. The compression algorithms used are designed such that _most_ of the audio data lost is outside the range of _most_ human hearing on _most_ playback systems... but not all. Anyway
When compressed files are burned back to CD, that lost data does not miraculously return - it's still gone. The music may be on CD, but it's not CD-quality. Ripping it again recompresses it, taking out even more data. As I said before, the majority of people may not hear the difference... but this method does adversely affect the quality.
From your description of how the virtual CD-burner works, I imagine that it is susceptible to the same problems.
There's no good method I know of to convert protected files to plain mp3 without any loss of quality. That's not to say these methods don't exist, just that I am not aware of them. The best thing I know to do is to use a service like eMusic, which provides plain, encryption/DRM-free mp3s, and to bite the bullet and buy the actual CD for those bands you really love.
For reference, some (admittedly very subjective) studies show that mp3 compression at 320 kbps is indistinguishable from the original.
